SUCCESSFUL PILOT OF SELENA+ AI DIABETIC RETINOPATHY SCREENING IN MYANMAR

24 September 2025 -Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) Global Ophthalmology (GO), in collaboration with EyRIS, has successfully completed a pilot study implementing an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening system in Myanmar.

The pilot was conducted at Taikkyi Township Hospital between November 2024 and January 2025. This
district-level hospital was deliberately chosen for its remote setting and limited access to specialist services. These conditions reflect the real-world challenges faced by healthcare systems in resource constrained environments, making the site an ideal test bed for AI-enabled screening.

By deploying SELENA+, EyRIS’s flagship AI solution for automated DR detection, the project demonstrated how advanced technology can deliver specialist-level screening at scale — even in communities with limited medical resources.

The pilot results highlight the strong performance of SELENA+ in Myanmar:

  • 100% specificity, 85% sensitivity – Critically, no cases of vision-threatening DR were missed, ensuring timely detection of patients most in need of treatment.
  • Accurate triaging – Patients requiring referral were flagged precisely, preventing unnecessary specialist referrals and easing strain on the healthcare system.
  • 50% reduction in screening time, streamlining the process and enhancing workflow efficiency for healthcare providers.

The system was calibrated to prioritize specificity, ensuring that scarce resources were focused on patients who genuinely required further medical care.

The pilot not only proved the accuracy of SELENA+, but also demonstrated strong acceptance by both patients and providers:

  • 98.6% patient acceptance rate, reflecting readiness among patients to embrace AI-enabled healthcare.
  • 99% provider confidence, underscoring the trust that frontline clinicians placed in the system to support their clinical decisions.

The success of this pilot was made possible through the leadership of Prof. Anna CS Tan (SNEC, SERI, Duke-NUS) and the dedicated efforts of her co-authors and collaborators:

  • Dr. Mya Wut Yee Soe – Insein General Hospital
  • Ms. Jasmine Ge – Singapore National Eye Centre & Singapore Eye Research Institute
  • Dr. Kan Htoo Aung – North Okkalapa General Hospital
  • Dr. Su Mon La – Naypyitaw Eye, ENT & Head-Neck Hospital

EyRIS extends our sincere gratitude to all partners and healthcare providers who contributed to this important milestone.
